Austria: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

This report includes information on the plant, animal, and microbial biotechnology situation in Austria. Austria continues to be one of the leading forces in Europe opposed to the use of agricultural biotechnology. Anti-biotech Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), farmer organizations, the foodprocessing sector, and the retail sector all campaign against genetically engineered (GE) agricultural and food products. Soybeans and soybean products for feed use are the only major GE products imported by Austria. Although not broadly discussed in the public, innovative biotechnologies have a higher acceptance within informed Austrian stakeholder groups.
