Burma: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)   |   BM2021-0028

There are no significant developments to convey since the previous report from October 2020. Although Burma (also called Myanmar) does not yet have a comprehensive biosafety legislation, the final version of the National Biosafety Framework and Biosafety Guidelines are completed and pending approval. The military coup and the outbreak of COVID-19 in the summer has slowed the approval process. This report describes the current policy related to agricultural biotechnology and how it is expected to change under the new framework. To date, only genetically engineered (GE) cotton has been approved for cultivation under the National Seed Policy.
