Chile: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

Biotech products can be produced in Chile only for reproduction and research purposes. Chile applies a specific normative to regulate the use of GE plant material. Chile remains the fifth largest producer of seeds (GE and non-GE seeds) in the world and the United States is the largest market for GE seeds. There is no commercial GE crop production and Chile does not require GE products to be labeled. If Chile could produce GE products commercially, it could be a viable producer of transgenic sugar beets, corn, and alfalfa.
