In 2023, the Chilean retail food industry witnessed a moderate recovery, with total sales reaching approximately $28.5 billion, a 2.3 percent increase over 2022. The Chilean retail sector is made up of large supermarkets, mid-sized grocery stores, convenience stores, and thousands of smaller independent mom-and-pop shops. Supermarkets and grocery stores remained the primary retail channels for food products, accounting for around 53.6 percent of the market share. Technology adoption will be a key driver in shaping the Chilean retail industry landscape, especially with increased investments in e-commerce, artificial intelligence, and automation. Furthermore, focusing on sustainability, health, and personalized experiences will be paramount in meeting evolving consumer demands.
