Colombian coffee production is expected to increase to 12.5 million bags (1 bag = 60 kilograms unless otherwise noted) green bean equivalent (GBE) in marketing year (MY) 2014/15, 4 percent higher than last year. Production is forecast to increase further in MY 2015/16 to 12.7 million bags GBE if weather remains favorable. Coffee prices have recently fallen below the Protection for the Income of Farmers (PIC) subsidy program trigger price. The Government of Colombia (GOC) remains steadfast in refusing to re-initiate the subsidies despite coffee farmer discontent and threats of nationwide protest.
