There is an ongoing intense debate about animal welfare in Germany. Consumers consider animal welfare within meat production as important. And by constitution, it has become a binding guideline for government action. However, Germany has become a world class exporter of pork and poultry. Higher animal welfare standards on national level would put German farmers at a cost disadvantage.
