India: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

Although Bt cotton remains the only biotech crop approved for commercial cultivation, the Government of India (GOI) made some progress in 2016 toward approving a locally-developed genetically engineered (GE) mustard event. Despite momentum on GE mustard, India’s political landscape continues to hinder the agricultural biotech regulatory system. Soy and canola oils derived from select GE soy and canola varieties are the only biotechnology food-derived products approved for import. Indian animal biotech research and development remains nascent, although Indian scientists haveachie ved some success in animal cloning.
