Kazakhstan: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual
There was one notable change in Kazakhstan over the last year with regard to genetically engineered (GE) products. The draft law “On State Regulation of Genetic Engineering Activities” was withdrawn from the Kazakh Parliament after five years of consideration, with the reason that it would demand extra budgetary spending. The outlook for biotechnology in Kazakhstan has diminished with the absence of any new legislation, as leaders rely on Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) regulations. In addition, the law on Seeds Farming was amended to restrict GE growth. New testing of processed products for GE ingredients has resulted in fines levied against importers.
