On April 9, 2020, the United States reported an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) to the International Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The outbreak was reported to have started on March 6, 2020. As a result of the report by the United States to the OIE, Namibia's Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform (MAWLR) notified the country's importers and the public that a ban on poultry imports from the administrative state of South Carolina would be instituted due to the HPAI outbreak. During 2019, Namibia imported 5,216 tons of poultry products from the United States at a value of USD$5 million.
