On November 26, 2016, High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) of the type H5N8 was detected at a commercial duck farm. On December 1, HPAI was found at two other duck farms in the same village. In total, about 207,000 ducks have been culled at eight duck farms. The most significant economic impact is the closure of the South African market, which represents an annual export value of about $100 million of frozen broiler cuts.
