There have been no official changes to the heavily regulated and cautious policy settings operated by the New Zealand Government in relation to products derived from biotechnology. Even though a court case decision negatively impacted on the progress toward the use of new types of gene manipulation for advanced plant breeding it has prompted a review of the regulations in light of the rapidly evolving technologies in this area.
