On October 23, 2021, the National People’s Congress of China (NPC) published the Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Law of the People's Republic of China (Revised Draft) for domestic comment. Once finalized, the revised law will replace the currently effective law of the same title, which was promulgated in 2006.
On November 15, 2021, China notified the National Food Safety Standard: Code of Hygienic Practice for Livestock and Poultry Edible Offal and Byproducts to the WTO SPS Committee as G/SPS/N/CHN/1234.
On November 15, 2021, China notified the National Food Safety Standard: Code of Hygienic Practice of Producing for Prepared Meat Products to the WTO SPS Committee as G/SPS/N/CHN/1240. This is the first notification of a domestic code of hygienic practice of producting for prepared meat products in China.

The Japanese food market was valued at $789 billion in 2020 with retail sales accounting for $474 billion (60 percent) and foodservice sales accounting for $239 billion (30 percent). Japan relies on imports from other countries for the bulk of its food supply.
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, FAS El Salvador identified an opportunity to seek market access for U.S. table-eggs. In February 2021, FAS obtained the equivalence needed to allow imports of fresh table-eggs from the United States, and the first shipment arrived in El Salvador on October 20th, 2021.
On December 14, 2021, the World Trade Organization (WTO) released its findings from the dispute panel initiated in August 2019 against India’s trade distorting sugar subsidies. The WTO report found that India’s subsidies violated its obligations under the multilateral agreement.

Japan: USJTA TRQs Underutilized in First Half of JFY 2021

The U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement (USJTA), which entered into force on January 1, 2020, improved market access for U.S. products through the creation of tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) for food wheat, wheat products, malt, processed cheese, whey, glucose and fructose, potato starch, corn starch, and inulin.
The Government of Argentina has announced new limits on corn and wheat exports. These limits are intended to guarantee sufficient supplies of both commodities for domestic users, in part to help reduce inflationary pressure.
