All foods sold in Australia must comply with a range of laws designed to protect consumer, plant, and animal health. These laws apply equally to imported and locally produced foods. All imported food must comply with quarantine and imported food requirements, and then with food safety requirements.

On April 19, 2022, the Ministry of Trade and Integration announced the second stage of 2022 meat and poultry tariff rate quotas (TRQs) by Harmonized System (HS) code for historic suppliers (i.e., importers). The second stage approved the distribution of 8,505 tons of beef and 94,500 tons of poultry.

Post sees Philippine biofuels consumption partially recovering in 2022 due to economic growth, as fuel ethanol demand grows 13 percent to 660 million liters and biodiesel increases 31 percent to 250 million liters with the projected movement from B2 to B5 blend and the fuel pool increases as forecast. Effective July 1, 2022, the Korean government announced adjustments to tariff-rate quotas (TRQ) for the second half of 2022 on seven key agricultural products to help stabilize food prices. On July 6, the Government of Costa Rica published a draft executive decree that would dramatically reduce tariffs on imported milled and rough rice. The vast majority of U.S. rice exported to Costa Rica in 2021 (valued at $25 million) entered under a duty free quota for rough rice established by the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement.

The sharp upsurge in the cost of farming inputs for corn farmers in South Africa intensified the risk of production in a weather dependent industry, despite record-high commodity prices. As a result, Post forecasts that South Africa’s corn area will stay flat in marketing year 2022/23. However, South Africa should maintain its status as a net exporter of corn under normal weather conditions.
