Chile: Salmon Overview

Salmon is Chile’s largest food and agricultural export and the second largest total export sector after copper. In 2021, exports totaled 615 thousand metric tons worth $4.8 billion. Production is growing rapidly; Chilean salmon production grew an average of 10.4 percent between 2016 and 2020 and totaled 1.1 million metric tons (MMT) in 2020.

Tanzania: Coffee Annual

MY 2022/23 coffee production is expected to decrease 4 percent to 1.15 million bags due to high fertilizer prices and dry conditions at the beginning of the marketing year. Post forecasts MY 2022/23 exports will decline 4 percent to 1.05 million bags due to lower exportable supplies.

Japan: Japan to Require Allergy Labeling for Walnuts

Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) will add walnuts to list of allergens that product manufacturers and importers must include on the label of packaged products containing walnuts. Currently, CAA strongly recommends including walnuts on the label, but does not require their inclusion.
On May 17, 2022, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued Notification F. No. STD/SP-20/T (Recycled Plastics-N) notifying amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations (2018). The notification was published in the Gazette of India – Extraordinary (official gazette) on May 18, 2022, and uploaded to the FSSAI website on May 24, 2022.

Thailand: Rice Price - Weekly

Rice export prices decreased one percent due to the weakening of the Thai baht.
On May 9, 2022, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) published on its website Notification No. F. No. Stds/SP-05/A-1. Y(01) Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations (2022). The notification had previously been published in the Gazette of India (official gazette) on May 6, 2022.

Chile: Citrus in Chile

Citrus production in Chile increased the past ten marketing years. Lemons and mandarins became a profitable alternative to table grape and avocado producers in the regions of Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Metropolitana and O’Higgins. Production of oranges remains relevant, but area planted has not increased as with lemons and mandarins.
On April 20, the Government of Serbia (GoS) lifted its prohibition on the export of wheat, corn, flour, and refined sunflower oil. In its place, introduced monthly export quotas. On April 30, the GoS increased export quotas on wheat and wheat flour.

India: Grain and Feed Update

FAS New Delhi (Post) is lowering its India market year (MY) 2022/2023 (April-March) wheat production forecast to 99 million metric tons (MMT) compared to the pre-harvest forecast of 110 MMT. The MY 2022/2023 wheat exports forecast is lowered to 6 MMT and ending stocks to 8.5 MMT due to tightening supplies.

Post expects MY2022/23 rice production to recover from MY2021/22 due to available water supply and abundant precipitation. MY2021/22 and MY2022/23 feed wheat imports could benefit from the temporary removal of restrictive import measures from May 10 to July 31, 2022.
