On July 20, 2022, Canada announced final regulations to amend the Food and Drug Regulations (FDR) to establish detailed conditions for the use of supplemental ingredients in food. The amendments will also establish additional requirements on the labelling of supplemented foods beyond the general requirements in the FDR for prepackaged foods.

Significant rainfall has alleviated severe drought conditions in large regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan but more is required to support wheat growth. Large regions of Manitoba that were waterlogged in June, now have adequate conditions after a heat wave dried up excess water.

Argentina: Grain and Feed Update

Wheat exports for marketing year (MY) 2022-2023 are forecast at 12.35 million tons, l.15 million tons lower than USDA’s official number as a result of lower production. The wheat and barley crops are suffering very dry weather. Barley exports in MY 2022-2023 are forecast at 3.7 million tons, the same as in MY 2021-2022.

Argentina: Raisin Annual

Argentina’s raisin production is forecast to remain stable in Marketing Year (MY) 2022/23 at 44,500 metric tons (MT). During December, crops suffered some negative effects from hale and strong winds, but managed to resiliently overcome these weather events. Exports are forecast at 39,000 MT, with Brazil as the primary destination, accounting for 70 percent of the Argentine exports.
On July 6, the Government of Costa Rica published a draft executive decree that would dramatically reduce tariffs on imported milled and rough rice. The vast majority of U.S. rice exported to Costa Rica in 2021 (valued at $25 million) entered under a duty free quota for rough rice established by the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement.
