Argentina: Sugar Annual

Argentine sugar exports in marketing year (MY) 2024/2025 are projected at 625,000 tons raw value, the largest in the past 15 years due to the combination of expected large production and large stocks of sugar passed in from the previous marketing year.
On April 15, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted a 31 percent chance of an above normal 2024 southwest monsoon. IMD will issue a end of May forecast for the Monsoon Core Zone (MCZ), which represents most rainfed agriculture regions in the country and is the critical forecast related to agricultural planning, planting, and production.

Nicaragua: Nicaragua Reports Screwworm Outbreak

Nicaragua reported an outbreak of New World screwworm to the World Organization for Animal Health following confirmation of a sample collected on March 12, 2024. Nicaragua is the largest cattle producer in Central America and last detected screwworm in 1996.
In calendar year 2023, Venezuelan agricultural imports dropped 8 percent year-on-year to $2.7 billion. By volume, however, agricultural imports increased 4 percent year-on-year owing to a decrease in import prices. Agricultural imports from the United States totaled $675 million, down 9 percent from 2022.

Burma: Grain and Feed Annual

Exporters and importers continue to face much uncertainty due to the military regime’s foreign currency control policies and continuing conflict between the regime and ethnic armed forces. FAS Rangoon forecasts Burma’s MY 2024/25 rice exports to recover to 1.7 MMT amid high stocks and expected relaxation of export controls. MY 2024/25 corn exports and wheat imports will remain flat.

MY 2024/25 sugar production is expected to recover from a 20 percent slump in MY 2023/24. Sugar consumption growth will likely decelerate in MY 2023/24 and MY 2024/25, following Thailand’s slow economic recovery and shrinking sugar demand by non-alcoholic beverage manufacturers due to the progressive sugar tax.
