South Africa: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

South Africa has a robust and experienced regulatory system for genetically engineered (GE) products which started with the publication of its “GMO” act in 1997. This enabled South Africa to become the ninth largest producer of GE crops in the world and by far the largest in Africa. The production area of GE corn, soybean, and cotton in South Africa is estimated at around 2.7 million hectares. Almost 90 percent of corn plantings, 95 percent of soybeans plantings, and all cotton plantings in South Africa are with GE seeds.
