South Africa: US-SADC Exchange on Good Regulatory Practices in Southern Africa
USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub brought together government regulators and standards organizations from across Southern Africa and the United States for a discussion with the Southern African Development Community (SADC), namely the SADC Cooperation in Standardization (SADCSTAN) and the SADC Technical Regulation Liaison Committee (SADCTRLC), in Johannesburg from June 1-2, 2015. Titled the “U.S.-SADC Exchange on Good Regulatory Practices with SADCSTAN and SADCTRLC,” this workshop provided an opportunity for regulators and standards bodies to discuss the importance of establishing good regulatory practices, harmonizing standards across the region, and ensuring that regulations and standards are scientifically based in all economic sectors; participants shared lessons and experiences learned in their respective countries. The event is important to trade policy because generating a regional consensus on requirements for product quality can accelerate trade and increase the volume of trade.
