Turkey’s sugar beet planted area is expected to increase by 3 percent to 340,000 hectares (ha) in MY 2018/19, due to the slightly increased quota for sugar production. Sugar beet production is forecast at 20.5 million metric tons (MMT) in marketing year (MY) 2018/19. The Sugar Agency and Sugar Board were abolished and all authorities were transferred to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Livestock (MinFAL). Starch-based sugar quotas were decreased to 5 percent from 10 percent. The privatization of state-owned sugar factories is continuing.
