Vietnam: Grain and Feed Update

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

In calendar year 2017, Post estimates the total feed demand down about 15 percent compared to CY 2016. In CY 2018, feed demand is up about 2 percent up compared to CY 2017. The marketing year (MY) 2016/2017 total wheat consumption is estimated to show a sharp increase compared to MY 2015/2016 due to the increased demand for both feed and wheat based food products. The sharp increase of feed wheat is due to its price competitiveness over corn. However, in MY 2017/2018, the wheat import is expected to be cut in half due to unfavorable corn prices. In My 2016/17, with the smaller local corn production, Vietnam imported more corn to satisfy the local growing animal feed industry. Despite slightly lower rice production, rice export is estimated to increase in MY 2016/2017, due to the increase demand from regional buyers.
