The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) is pleased to announce the Virtual Market Showcase: U.S. Food Processing Ingredients for Malaysian Food & Beverage Manufacturers. This virtual event will take place August 17-18, 2022, and will link U.S. exporters of food ingredients to potential customers in Malaysia.

U.S. Food Processing Ingredients for Malaysian Food & Beverage Manufacturers will provide a unique opportunity for U.S. exporters of food ingredient products to learn about trade and economic conditions in Malaysia and to expand into this dynamic market by connecting one-on-one with potential buyers through virtual business-to-business meetings.  U.S. companies will also showcase their products to local buyers through a virtual platform.  The agenda will include:

A pre-event market briefing providing an overview of Malaysia’s food processing sector, including key trends and opportunities.  The briefing will also highlight Malaysia’s role as a key producer of halal consumer products for Southeast Asia and other halal markets.

Targeted business-to-business meetings to connect selected U.S. companies with serious Malaysian buyers.

Malaysia’s multibillion-dollar food processing industry is a robust sector that is a crucial component of the country’s national economic growth. The Malaysian food processing industry includes several multinational corporation facilities, as well as a wide range of small and medium-sized companies that export throughout the Southeast Asia region.  The main products manufactured are beverages, canned seafood, canned fruits and vegetables, confectionary, dairy products, noodles, and bakery products.

The food manufacturing sector grew by 5.5 percent in 2020 and 8.9 percent in 2021.  While beverage manufacturing sector activity declined in 2020, it regained 9.4 percent in 2021. The sector is expected to grow further in 2022 as Malaysia’s economy fully reopens.  Inputs and raw materials for the Malaysian food processing industry are imported from many suppliers globally, making it an excellent target for U.S. exporters.  There are opportunities for a wide range of U.S. ingredients, including:

  • Dairy products
  • Fresh and processed potatoes
  • Food-grade soy products
  • Processed fruit (dried, frozen, purees, juices)
  • Tree nuts
  • Ingredients with special properties (e.g., health benefits, gluten free, organic)
