The following changes have been made to the 2022 FAIRS report: 1) Section II – Labeling. Effective December 1, 2023, food containing hydrogenated oils must be labeled. 2) Section III – Packaging. Glass and plastic bottles will be subject to additional levies. 3) Section VI – Other Requirements, Regulations, and Registration Measures.

Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) will add walnuts to list of allergens that product manufacturers and importers must include on the label of packaged products containing walnuts. Currently, CAA strongly recommends including walnuts on the label, but does not require their inclusion.

On May 17, 2022, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued Notification F. No. STD/SP-20/T (Recycled Plastics-N) notifying amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations (2018). The notification was published in the Gazette of India – Extraordinary (official gazette) on May 18, 2022, and uploaded to the FSSAI website on May 24, 2022.

On May 9, 2022, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) published on its website Notification No. F. No. Stds/SP-05/A-1. Y(01) Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations (2022). The notification had previously been published in the Gazette of India (official gazette) on May 6, 2022.

On April 20, the Government of Serbia (GoS) lifted its prohibition on the export of wheat, corn, flour, and refined sunflower oil. In its place, introduced monthly export quotas. On April 30, the GoS increased export quotas on wheat and wheat flour.

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) proposed revisions to Japan’s maximum residue levels for 9 agricultural chemicals (Etofenprox, Fenpyroximate, Florasulam, Fluensulfone, Tetraconazole, Cloxacillin, 1,2-Dichlorobenzene, Didecyldimethylammonium chloride, and Nicarbazin) for various agricultural commodities.

On May 11, 2022 the National Health Commission (NHC) approved 36 new food materials and additives, including seven enzymes derived from Genetically Modified Microorganisms (GMMs). These approvals follow an earlier announcement issued on March 1 of 32 food materials and additives, including 4 GMM derived enzymes, approved for use in China.

On June 2, 2022, the Government of Morocco suspended customs duties on sunflower, soybean, and rapeseed. This measure will take effect starting June 3, 2022 and continue until further notice. This decision is intended to protect citizens’ purchasing power in the face of rising global prices of various essential goods.

Morocco notified G/SPS/N/MAR/84 on May 12, 2022. An unofficial translation is included in this report. Comments are due no later than July 11, 2022. The notification concerns shelf life and storage temperature requirements for cheese and cheese products.

On April 24, 2022, China’s National Feed Industry Standardization Technical Committee issued a notice to collect industry input and suggestions on the establishment or amendment of national pet food standards.

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply (MAPA) published Ordinance 558, which establishes procedures for accreditation, modification, audit, and cancellation of edible animal-origin products registration in Brazil.
