Section Updated: Section I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, and Appendix I, II. The updates include the new Special Act on Imported Food Safety Management, which shall go into effect on February 4, 2016. This new Act will require that all foreign food facilities and establishments be registered by the Ministry of Food & Drug Safety (MFDS). MFDS plans to grant a six-month grace period for facility registration until August 3, 2016 to allow a smooth transition. Other changes include food items to be added to allergen label, a change in a gluten-free claim, the traceability system for infant/baby food and health functional foods.

The ongoing transformation of Saudi Arabia bodes well for the retail food sector. In 2023, the Saudi food retail market was estimated at more than $51 billion and projected to increase by more than 5 percent annually in the coming years due to the continued urbanization, growing population, changing shopping habits, expansion of physical store locations , and increasing popularity of online platforms.
